What Is a Portable Data Centre?

A portable data centre is a complete, self-contained data centre built to be transported and deployed wherever compute is needed. Racks, power distribution, cooling, fire protection, monitoring and security are integrated inside a single enclosure, so the facility arrives ready to connect rather than being built on site.

Most portable data centres are housed in standard ISO shipping containers, which is why they are also called containerised or mobile data centres. Because they use standard container dimensions, they can move on existing freight networks by truck, rail or ship, and be set down on a prepared pad instead of inside a purpose-built building.

WinDC's portable data centres are designed for high-density AI and GPU workloads, and deployed directly at renewable energy sites across Australia. When requirements change, or a better site becomes available, the data centre moves with you.

Each WinDC portable data centre is a 20- or 40-foot ISO containerised module delivering 100 kW to 1.8 MW of critical IT load, engineered for intermodal transport and redeployable fully loaded.

Portable vs Fixed Data Centres

A fixed data centre is built for one location and one long life. A portable data centre is built to be deployed quickly, scaled in steps and relocated as needs change.

Built to Move

Portability is engineered in from the start, not added afterwards. Every WinDC module is factory-built, tested and pre-configured before it leaves the factory.

01

Intermodal by design

Standard 20- or 40-foot ISO container form factor that moves on existing freight networks by truck, rail or ship, with no custom transport required.

02

Protected in transit

Vibration and shock protection keeps racks and hardware secure on the road, so modules can be redeployed fully loaded rather than stripped and rebuilt.

03

Ready to connect on arrival

Power distribution, liquid cooling, N+1 redundancy, monitoring and security are integrated and tested in the factory. On site, commissioning is about connection, not construction.

04

Connected anywhere

Enterprise-grade Starlink, 5G and fibre where available, with traffic bonding and QoS management, so remote and regional sites stay online.

05

Managed as one fleet

A central command module provides orchestration, observability and AI-driven predictive maintenance across every site, with 24/7 monitoring and SLA-governed service levels.

How a Portable Deployment Works

Because the data centre is built in a factory and shipped as a finished unit, the slowest parts of a traditional build disappear.

01 Site assessment

We identify a site with available power, typically a solar, wind or hydro generation site with stranded or curtailed energy, and confirm access, pad and connectivity.

02 Factory build

Modules are built and pre-configured for your workload, including racks, cooling, power and fleet management, while the site is prepared in parallel.

03 Transport and connect

Modules travel by truck, rail or ship, are set down on site and connected behind the meter, going from site assessment to live compute in approximately 90 days.

04 Scale or relocate

Add modules as demand grows, or move them to a new site if your requirements change or a better renewable site becomes available.

Where Portable Data Centres Fit

Portable data centres suit organisations that need capacity fast, need it somewhere a traditional data centre can't reach, or need the option to move it later.

AI and GPU capacity, fast

High-density GPU modules for training and inference, deployed in months rather than years. Together, WinDC modules form Australia's AI factories.

Why Move Compute to the Power

Australia's biggest constraint on new compute is power. Portable data centres let compute go where clean energy already is.

01

Bypass grid congestion

Metro grids are congested and new data centre connections can take years. Portable modules deploy behind the meter at the generation site instead.

02

Use energy that would otherwise be wasted

Australia curtails large amounts of renewable generation every year. Portable data centres turn that stranded energy into productive compute.

03

Lower cost per GPU-hour

Drawing power directly at the source avoids transmission losses and grid charges, supporting up to 50% lower total cost of ownership.

04

Verified zero-emission compute

Every module generates Grokens, audit-ready attestations that map compute usage to time-matched renewable generation.

Portable Data Centre FAQs

What is a portable data centre?

A portable data centre is a complete, self-contained data centre built inside a transportable enclosure, usually a standard ISO shipping container. It includes racks, power, cooling, monitoring and security, and is designed to be moved and deployed wherever compute is needed.

What is the difference between a portable, mobile and containerised data centre?

The terms are often used interchangeably. Containerised describes the enclosure, a standard shipping container. Portable and mobile describe the ability to move it. WinDC's portable data centres are 20- or 40-foot ISO containerised modules that can be relocated by truck, rail or ship.

How is a portable data centre different from a modular data centre?

A modular data centre is built from prefabricated units that combine to reach the capacity you need. A portable data centre is a modular unit designed specifically to be transported and redeployed. Every WinDC module is both modular and portable.

How quickly can a portable data centre be deployed?

WinDC modules are factory-built and pre-configured before delivery, so a deployment can go from site assessment to live compute in approximately 90 days, compared with 2–5 years for a conventional data centre build.

Can a portable data centre be moved once it is installed?

Yes. WinDC modules are engineered for intermodal transport with vibration and shock protection, and can be redeployed fully loaded to a new site if your requirements change.

Can portable data centres run AI and GPU workloads?

Yes. WinDC portable data centres are built for high-density AI workloads, with liquid cooling for GPU clusters and support for NVIDIA and AMD GPUs, enterprise servers and CPU configurations.

What does a site need to host a portable data centre?

A prepared pad, access for delivery, a power source and connectivity. WinDC typically deploys at renewable generation sites and can provide Starlink, 5G or fibre connectivity. We assess every site as part of planning.

How much does a portable data centre cost?

Cost depends on capacity, hardware and site. Because portable modules avoid large construction and grid upgrades, and run on behind-the-meter renewable power, the model is designed to deliver up to 50% lower total cost of ownership. Contact us for a quote.
